Have you ever heard about the Australian Pink Clay Mask by Sand&Sky? It has been launched on the market in 2017 and very rapidly became a huge hit thanks to social media. This product is a clean mix of natural ingredients and according to its creators “can be used as an instant detox mask to tighten pores, invigorate a dull complexion and instantly boost radiance.”
The description and the selected ingredients looked pretty promising to me, so I decided to try this mask as well but in my own way… the DIY-way. I initially had some of the ingredients listed and conducted a thorough research about those that I have never used before (this mask is 100% Australian after all 🙂 ). Here’s what I found:
Rich in minerals, Australian Pink Clay restores and replenishes skin with moisture, draws out impurities and provides light exfoliation which is perfect for sensitive skin.
Bentonite Clay removes toxins from pores, heals the skin and reduces inflammation. It also helps to lighten the skin and eliminate acne scars.
Aloe Vera Gel cleanses, moisturizes and soothes skin. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Witch hazel (Hamamelis) reduces irritation and pore size.
Sea Kelp offers excellent hydration as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-aging benefits.
Kakadu Plum and Licorice root are very powerful antioxidants that help to slow down the aging process, diminish the appearance of discoloration and age spots. They give a natural shine and glow to the skin.
Now, let’s focus on the how-to part of this fantastic DIY face mask. To obtain the best results, I followed the recommendations of the creators of the original Australian Pink Clay Mask. According to them, this mask has unique properties thanks to its high content of clay: “our masks content is 50% clay, which drives more effective skin results.” With this in mind (and based on my previous experiences with clay masks), I came up with the following proportions:
Ingredients (enough to make 16 x 2.1oz jars of mask!):
- 1 tablespoon Australian Pink Clay
- 1 tablespoon Calcium Bentonite Clay (Aztec Secret)
- 1/2 to 1 tablespoon Witch Hazel Hydrolat (adjust the quantity to give to the mask the texture you prefer; I used 1 tbsp)
- 1/2 to 1 tablespoon Aloe Vera Gel (adjust the quantity to give to the mask the texture you prefer; I used 3/4 tbsp)
- 1 teaspoon Kakadu Plum Fruit extract
- 1/2 teaspoon Licorice Root
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon Sea Kelp
- 2 drops of Vitamin E oil
- Optional: 2 drops of your favorite Essential Oil. I used Rosemary Essential Oil.
Nota Bene: The original Australian Pink Clay mask contains small amounts of Pomegranate Sterols, Old Man Weed and Mangosteen Fruit Extract that help to brighten and give an even complexion to the skin. I did not add any in my homemade mask as these ingredients are not very common where I live.
Instructions:
- Mix all the dry ingredients
- Add the hydrolat progressively to the dry ingredients. Mix it well to obtain a creamy texture.
- Add the rest of ingredients. Mix well.

How to use it:
Use the mask before bedtime.
- Apply on clean, dry skin. You can use a makeup brush for a smoother application.
- Leave the mask on for 10 minutes. Don’t let it dry completely.
- Wash it away with clean, warm water. Don’t forget to apply your favorite toner/hydrolat (I use this organic rose water) and moisturizing cream.
Verdict: I have been using this DIY face mask twice per week for a month now. Directly after the first application, my skin looked brighter and healthier. It helped to reduce pores and the small inflammations I had at the time due to seasonal changes. Used regularly, it prevents from additional breakouts, makes the complexion even and gives my skin a natural glow!
